Goal 5: Effectively communicate and collaborate to deliver, market, and advocate for library and information services
Outcome 5a. Articulate the critical value of a marketing approach to delivering services
I used to think that it was obvious to everyone what libraries did, but now libraries are competing with many other information sources. In LIS 770 (Management of Libraries and Information Centers) we explored the idea of marketing and the reason why this idea is relevant as never before in library management. For reflection I chose an interesting article from Fortune magazine that discussed a franchise marketing organization in the Middle East and the very specific cultural approaches that made its business successful. In the same way, “Libraries need to know where they want to go and then develop marketing plans that are executed consistently over a long period”. I now realize that in this competitive information world libraries, as an information mall, need to market their unique services and community contribution in order to stay relevant.

Outcome 5b. Participate in an advocacy campaign, within or outside of the classroom
As a cataloger, I review and participate in AUTOCAT. It is a popular cataloging forum where librarians often post interesting questions or discuss important problems. In July 2014 an interesting and emotional discussion took place in AUTOCAT. As noted in the attached, Julie Renee Moore, the Head of Cataloging from California State University suggested that “cataloger” is an old fashioned term and perhaps it should be replaced. I advocated for the library science profession to support the continuing use of the term “cataloger”. In this particular case I felt that I could use my linguistic training to make a contribution to the discussion. Librarians have a unique heritage that we should respect. My conviction is that we should not eliminate a unique heritage that has been accumulated through centuries and that is contained in the word “cataloger”. (Catalogue from Greek κατάλογος)

Outcome 5c. Negotiate group dynamics in pursuit of a common goal
Outcomes 5d.-5f. Speak, write, and listen to achieve common understanding
The Ellin Greene Storytelling Collection Project in my LIS731 (Subject Analysis) class was an interesting assignment that gave me a taste of a task to be accomplished in a professional environment. This project demonstrates better than anything else how to speak, write, listen, and negotiate to reach a common understanding when working as a Task Force. There were five of us in the group. We had to create a subject guide for the Ellin Greene Storytelling Collection which is an amazing collection of fairy tales, fables and mythology from all over the world that would be of great interest to folklorists, anthropologists and storytellers. We all pretended to be colleagues. Understanding that the project would be very demanding and time-consuming made most of the group members very active during the entire time.
During our first face-to-face meeting we determined our schedule and established minor deadlines for different parts. It was absolutely wonderful that all members respected the deadlines. We moved smoothly through the process and everybody could see the project progress. It gave us a great deal of enthusiasm.
Google Docs was our discussion arena and we wrote 30 pages. I have attached this working document as an excellent artifact showing the group dynamics and understanding by each group member of the final goal and intermediary goals on our way.
My participation is noted in green. Our final product, Subject Guide, is also attached.

Outcome 5g. Apply technology to connect, communicate and collaborate
In my LIS799 (Practicum) class and in LIS801 (Independent Study in Map Cataloging) I used another helpful technology to document and communicate my practicing and learning progress. Using the www.weebly.com platform I created a website where I posted my blogs about my experience at the Library of Congress with the intention to also use this website for my professional portfolio. I believe that a visual component is very important for virtual communication. Weebly.com provides the ability to design a visually pleasing website that facilitates the delivery of information and makes the communication pleasant. I downloaded texts, files, and images. I created internal links to connect my pages and external links to provide the connection with other websites. I also created a mechanism for feedback. If readers had comments, they could respond. I enjoy using technology and creating something new. My conviction is that in effective online communication both parts are equally important – the content and the presentation.
