Goal 3: Navigate, curate and create information across the spectrum of human records from local to global contexts
Outcome 3a. Utilize the resources needed to manage information
Catalogers use different schemas to manage information in a variety of formats. In the attachment there is an example of the exercise that I did in the LIS882 (Metadata for Internet Resources) class. In this exercise, I created metadata descriptions for three different pictures of famous trees. This was a challenging assignment since I had to learn about using the Dublin Core elements, the different controlled vocabularies as well as a local Metadata Application Profile (MAP) – a tool intended to support greater standardization within a digital collection. The MAP included two Type of Tree elements, one using the AAT vocabulary and the other using the TGM vocabulary. Part of the challenge and learning experience of the exercise was to discover which terms from which vocabulary apply to the type of tree in a given image and to observe the similarities and differences between both the terms themselves and the format of terms in these two vocabularies. It was an excellent training exercise.

Outcome 3b. Design tools that facilitate access to information
Library patrons frequently have similar queries. In such cases designing a tool to answer common information needs rather than frequently answer the same question becomes necessary. I was assigned a task to select, evaluate and create an instructional presentation. For this LIS704 (Reference and Online Services) project I selected ThomasNet.com which is a platform for product sourcing and supplier discovery. I created an instructional presentation explaining how to use ThomasNet.com. Later I learned that my instructional presentation turned out to be popular as it has been viewed more than 8,700 times. http://www.slideshare.net/ElenaStuart/thomas-net-28101151 |
Outcome 3c. Evaluate tools that facilitate access to information
Indexing and abstracting services are usually aimed at journal articles and provide a quick overview of their content. The level of detail provided by different services can vary and for LIS732 (Indexing and Abstracting) we were asked to evaluate an indexing and abstracting service. I chose the MLA International Bibliography for evaluation because of my love of international literature.
The resource is compiled by MLA international staff members with the assistance of volunteer specialists in various subject fields. Field bibliographers may assume responsibility for at least five periodicals in order to produce not less than a hundred citations per year. Bibliographers are trained individually using telephone training sessions. They must be MLA members.
My evaluation is below and it covers a variety of criteria that are used to undertake an evaluation.

Outcome 3d. Assess applicability of current and emerging technologies to information management
Given the amount of information that must be collected, accessed and presented, the application of technology is absolutely necessary for a library to function. In LIS753 (Internet Fundamentals and Design) I learned about using and applying technology. The purpose of the class was the creation of a website from scratch. This project was overwhelming and very challenging. The increasing complexity of every new page shows the progress of my skills. I am very happy that I was able to take the course. I have used the skills I obtained in this class for a new website for my portfolio. I consider this class to be one of the most valuable I have taken. It has given me an excellent skill and an understanding of how technology works.
I have attached an excerpt of HTML code and the styling code for the entire Wieliczka page as an example of my skill. My traveling notes From Moscow towards the Adriatic Coast became the content for this website.
