Goal 1: Develop a professional identity, including commitment to core values of LIS
Outcome 1a. Describe the historical foundations of library and information professions
Libraries have a long history from ancient times to the present where technology became a key component. I started my career as a librarian before computers were used in libraries and now I cannot imagine a library without the use of technology. In my first assignment for the LIS701 (Introduction to Library and Information Science) class I discussed the social value of libraries in history and considered if the word “library” was passé. My conclusion was that the word itself was not outdated. However, libraries are in a state of change and the profession needs leaders who can clearly define its role, purpose and value to a society because if they do not, those who do not have a historical or cultural understanding of the library will.

Outcome 1b. Articulate the philosophies of the library and information professions
We are living in a rapidly changing environment. With the appearance of advanced technologies in general and the advent of the Internet in particular Library and Information Science has been continuously changing. Reference services are part of that transition. These services have been impacted significantly due to advancing technologies, changing user expectations, and the explicit move to providing online and distance service. In my research paper for the LIS 701 class, I reflected on the future of academic reference by discussing the changes that have occurred and predicting changes that might occur. Contemporary reference services are provided using instant messaging (IM), chat, e-mail, and cell phones. Personal contact is often missing. It is hard to imagine the library of 2040, but critical decisions should continue to be driven by our strong commitment to thoughtful service, to intellectual freedom, and to free access to information. Fundamental principles should stay the same no matter if technology changes.

Outcome 1c. Identify the core values and ethics of the library and information professions
Even though most libraries now provide access to the Internet, public and professional debate about intellectual freedom issues continues to be active. One core value of librarianship is that information should not be censored and should be freely available to all. I do not believe that all principles should be absolute. The reason is that information has consequences. As a mother, I would be deeply troubled if a library provided pornographic content to a child. The availability and provision of certain types of information has deeply divided the library science profession. As this example shows the application of principles apart from the consideration of broader cultural issues is not simple. In my LIS701 paper “Sensible Filtering” I discussed whether Internet filtering is an appropriate mechanism for libraries to consider when providing children with access to information on the Internet.

Outcome 1d. Articulate a personal professional philosophy of the library and information professions
My personal professional philosophy is formulated on the first page of my portfolio: “Continuous learning – High integrity – Creative mind”. I believe that in the current environment librarians should concentrate their efforts on the transition to RDA and BIBFRAME to reach a new destination called the Semantic Web. A linked data environment is the next step in using technology to create access to information through logical linkage. This is a chance for libraries to move from solely creating records to capturing data at its source. It would be appropriate for catalogers with technical training to be leading this change and it would be exciting to be part of this revolution of information access. My reflection from LIS 730 (Cataloging and Classification) is about how the Linked Data environment will work and what it will mean to be a cataloger in this thrilling new environment.

Outcome 1e. Participate in professional activities and associations
Cataloging of non-Roman languages is difficult and presents many challenges for catalogers. This issue is of particular interest to me since I am a Russian librarian who first learned the Cyrillic alphabet. In January of 2014 I initiated a discussion about it on AUTOCAT, a popular, international email discussion list for those interested in discussion issues related to cataloging and classification. I wanted to understand the issues involved in cataloging non-Roman languages. My posting provoked an active discussion with many different opinions expressed. It turned out that the process of Romanization is full of controversy. I hope that I will have opportunities to continue this dialogue in the future.
